Day Three: The Heat is On!

The fog machines got a pretty good workout on a sizzling Sunday afternoon at Russek Field and so did the West Liberty University football team.

It was the first time in two years that the temperature had topped 90 degrees in West Liberty and the humidity was putting up some pretty big numbers as well on the Hilltoppers’ first day in shoulder pads at this year’s pre-season camp.

Everybody seemed to tolerate the conditions pretty well. The MondoTurf playing surface did its job, keeping the field-level heat from becoming oppressive, and the training staff made sure everyone was properly hydrated throughout a brisk two-hour workout.

Several players, including returning QB Zach Amedro and All-WVIAC WR/RB Eddie Hills, impressed during a 7-on-7 period. Later in the afternoon, quarterbacks and receivers got in some good reps on their timing routes in the end zone. There was also a special-teams period that gave new kicker Mike Blewett a chance to show off his leg strength on kick coverage and return sequences.

A few Hilltoppers picked up some minor bumps and bruises but nothing appeared likely to have any lasting effect. The team is scheduled to work out in helmets and shoulder pads again on Monday afternoon before donning full pads for Tuesday’s first two-a-day session of the pre-season.
