Day Four: Who’ll Stop The Rain?

A driving rain welcomed the West Liberty football team to an already-steamy Russek Field for Monday afternoon’s pre-season workout. The precipitation was nice while it lasted but when the sun came back out for the final hour of practice, it didn’t take long for the mercury to climb back into the upper 80s.

Working out in “tops” – helmets and shoulder pads over shorts – for the second straight day, the Hilltoppers got in some special-teams and position work early before spending the rest of the afternoon in offense vs. defense mode.

“Tomorrow is going to be our first day in full pads and our first two-a-day of the month,” head coach Roger Waialae said. “We wanted to get their tempo up a little bit today.”

The ones and twos, primarily the returning veterans and transfers, generally performed well on both sides of the ball. The highlight of the session came early when WR Willie Walker split the safeties to haul in a 55-yard bomb from returning QB Zach Amedro.

The coaches probably won’t be putting together a highlight reel for the threes (newcomers) but Waialae said that was to be expected.

“This team has a lot of juniors and seniors who have been through this two or three times,” said the coach. “They know what they’re doing and they know what we’re trying to do. That’s why there’s such a big gap right now between the returning guys and the first-year kids.

“I thought our backs ran very well today and our receivers looked good individually. Now we need to get them some more group reps to make sure everybody’s on the same page.”

The Hilltoppers will be back on the field bright and early Tuesday morning – 9 a.m. – for their first full-contact session of the pre-season. After a break for lunch, treatment and rehydration, they’ll go back to work in a 3 p.m. session with “tops.”

West Liberty women’s basketball standouts Tori Hansen and Julie Cessna braved the hot and humid conditions to provide us with today’s photo album. Here’s the link: Training Camp: Day 4 Photos

Thanks for the help, ladies.
