Day Six: Taking Turns

August 12, 2009

The West Liberty University football team butted heads for nearly two hours Wednesday afternoon in a spirited practice at Russek Field.

After working up a good sweat in individual and group drills, it was offense vs. defense for the rest of the afternoon.

Head coach Roger Waialae said the defense dominated the Inside Run series today but the offense was able to get in some licks of its own later on in the session.

Senior running back/wide receiver Eddie Hills sparkled with several long runs out of the backfield and some excellent catches lined up in the slot.

Junior wideout Willie Walker continued to put together an outstanding August. That’s him in the picture above, laying out parallel to the ground to pull in a 45-yard bomb from junior QB Zach Amedro. Redshirt junior Kevon Calhoun also had a strong day running out of the A-Back position.

Offensive coordinator Gary Krol got a little excited when several center-quarterback exchanges wound up on the ground. Several centers and signalcallers found themselves being tossed in and out of the huddle before the problem was corrected.

Defensively, several linebackers showed the ability to make plays in space. Returning defensive tackle Joey McGee and juco transfer defensive end Eghosa Ogbebor also impressed.

Mike Blewett, the juco transfer brought in to handle the kicking and punting chores, impressed by drilling several field goals from 40-45 yards during special teams work.

Former Lady Hilltopper basketball standout Julie Cessna snapped more than 100 pictures for today’s photo album. You can access it at the following link: Training Camp Photos: Day 6

Quarterback Zach Amedro is today’s featured player in our video interview segment.

The Hilltoppers are scheduled for a double session on Thursday. They’ll go in full pads at 9 a.m., followed by a 3 p.m. workout in “tops.”

Thanks to all the “huddlers” for your interest in West Liberty University football. We’ve been getting some great feedback since starting this site and look forward to seeing everybody at the games this season.
