Day 14: Under Pressure

August 20, 2009

The defense had one of its best days of the preseason during Thursday afternoon’s full-pads session at West Liberty University’s Russek Field.

The defensive backs opened practice with their best 7-on-7 performance yet as cornerbacks Derrick Evans, Josh Madrid and Scott Houghton all had multiple pass breakups during the segment.Amedro-McGee

The front seven made its presence felt in a major way during team and blitz work, harrying and hurrying quarterback Zach Amedro throughout the day. Defensive ends Ryan Mirich, Isaac Omaits and Josh Beadnell all came through with “sacks” as did linebackers Clay Beeler and Mike Buffo.

When the pass rush wasn’t getting all the way through to the quarterback, it frequently got close enough to upset the timing. As a result, there were more incomplete passes on Thursday than there had been in the previous two sessions combined.

It wasn’t all defense, however. Amedro did find time to hit Willie Walker with a 22-yard bullet in the back of the end zone to finish off one possession. Madrid appeared to have great defensive position but the 6-5 Walker simply outjumped the defensive back to make the catch. Wide receiver Kashif Walls had another long gainer that put the offense in the red zone. The longest play of the day was turned in by senior vet Eddie Hills, who got behind the secondary to pull in a perfectly-thrown lob from Amedro for a 55-yard score.

During the individual line segment, returning senior tackles Ben Staggs and Tim Ickes stood out for the offense while junior offensive lineman Jose Baez continued his impressive play. Mirich and Omaits were solid on the defensive side.

Junior kicker Mike Blewett drilled a 52-yard field goal during special teams work and just missed on a 55-yarder. Freshman kicker Jeff Hoak connected from 49 yards out.
