West Liberty’s Walls Honored as WVIAC Player of the Week

September 23, 2009

kashif_standsPRINCETON, W.Va. – The high-powered West Liberty University offense delivered its second straight West Virginia Conference Player of the Week Award on Sunday.

Junior wide receiver Kashif Walls was named this week’s WVIAC Offensive Player of the Week after pulling in 9 passes for 171 yards and 3 touchdowns during the Hilltoppers’ 49-26 romp at West Virginia Wesleyan.

Walls pulled in touchdown passes of 17, 22 and 26 yards from West Liberty quarterback Zach Amedro – last week’s WVIAC honoree – as Coach Roger Waialae’s Hilltoppers posted their third straight victory of the young season.

It was the third straight week that Walls had topped the 100-yard receiving mark and his second consecutive week with 3 touchdown catches for a West Liberty offense that ranks at or near the top of the NCAA Division II national charts in passing yards, total yards and scoring.

The 6-3, 205-pound Walls is in his first season with the Hilltoppers after transferring in from a Minnesota junior college. After just his fourth college game, the slender sprinter leads the nation with 9 touchdown catches and also ranks among the national leaders with 24 catches for 532 yards – an average of 22.2 yards per catch and 133.0 yards per game.

“I’m glad to see our kids receiving some conference honors,” Waialae said. “That reflects well on our entire team. We have a lot of playmakers but the best thing about them is the unselfishness. Kashif and the rest of the receivers really work hard to create opportunities for each other and that makes all of them better.”

Charleston defensive lineman Ted Schaible and Fairmont State defensive back Dewey McDonald shared WVIAC Defensive Player of the Week honors this week while Charleston kicker Wes Sherrill was the WVIAC Special Teams Player of the Week.

The Hilltoppers (3-1, 1-0) return to Russek Field this weekend to host WVIAC rival Fairmont State (1-3, 1-2). Kickoff is set for Saturday at 1 p.m.
