West Liberty Closing In On Top 25 Spot

October 8, 2009

WACO, Texas – The surging West Liberty University football team just missed making its first-ever appearance in the national Top 25 when the latest NCAA Division II coaches’ poll was released Monday afternoon.

Coming off a hard-earned 29-17 victory at Glenville State on Saturday, Coach Roger Waialae’s Hilltoppers received 23 votes in this week’s balloting by the American Football Coaches Association’s national ranking committee.

That left West Liberty (5-1) just two spots outside the Top 25. North Carolina-Pembroke held down the No. 25 spot with 56 votes, followed by Findlay (Ohio) with 49 votes and West Liberty at 23. California (Pa.) and Wingate (N.C.) were close behind with 19 votes.

Saturday’s win against the Pioneers stretched the Hilltoppers’ winning streak to 5 games. The lone blemish on the West Liberty record was a 42-30 season-opening loss at No. 13 Edinboro (Pa.).

The University of Charleston (6-0) is the only other WVIAC team in the voting. The Golden Eagles’ No. 11 ranking this week is the highest in school history.

Grand Valley State (Mich.) continues to receive 24 of the 25 first-place votes and holds down the No. 1 spot in the poll for the seventh straight week. Abilene Christian, North Alabama, Bloomsburg (Pa.) and Central Washington round out the top 5.

The Hilltoppers host West Virginia State Saturday in West Liberty’s annual Homecoming Game. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at Russek Field.
